Student Duo Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication is an added layer of security that sends a confirmation notification to your phone or device of your choice when you log into your MyNTC student account and Cisco Secure Client VPN. It strengthens access security by requiring two methods (also referred to as factors) to verify your identity.

This prevents someone else from gaining access to your account if they somehow gain access to your password. In the near future we will add additional applications. If you would like to take advantage of this service please contact the IT Helpdesk at https://www.ntc.edu/helpdesk and let them know you would like to be set up for two-factor authentication and then please follow the steps below.

Instructions

Steps to Setup Two-Factor Authentication:

  1. Create a ticket for the NTC IT Helpdesk at https://myhelpdesk.ntc.edu/ to enroll in two-factor authentication.

  2. On the device you choose to use for authentication search the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and download the application Duo Mobile.

  3. After your ticket has been updated and indicates that you have been enrolled wait a day to receive an email from DUO Security (no-reply@duosecurity.com). This email will be sent to your NTC student email account.

TIP: Open this email on a device that is NOT going to be used for authentication such as your laptop or desktop.

  1. Click the link in the email from DUO Security to setup two-factor authentication.

  1. Click on Start setup.

6. Follow the instructions for the mobile device you want to use for two-factor authentication and click Continue.

7. Enter your phone number and place a check in the box to verify that this is the correct number and click continue.

8. Choose the type of phone and click Continue.

9. Open the Duo Mobile app on your phone. When you start the app you may be prompted to allow the Duo Mobile app to send you notifications, click allow.

10. Once the application is open click Add Account at the bottom.

11. Duo will ask for permission to access the camera, please allow this. The camera will be used to take a photo of the DUO code. Once you allow access your camera will become active.

12. Go back to the computer or laptop you used to complete steps 3-8 and click on I have Duo Mobile installed.

13. Hold your phone’s camera up to the code and the camera will take a picture of it. If successful a check box will appear over the code as show below. Then click on Continue.

14. On your phone the Duo Mobile app will now show Northcentral Technical College.

15. On your computer or laptop, click Continue and Finish Enrollment.

  1. At this point you have successfully installed Duo Mobile on your mobile device and will now need to use it when attempting to log into MyNTC or Cisco AnyConnect VPN.

Using Duo Mobile

To use Duo Mobile you will need to go to a Duo protected website like MyNTC or application like Cisco AnyConnect VPN. Enter your login credentials like you normally would. At this point you will receive a notification on your mobile device.

Or open the Duo Mobile App tap on the green ribbon at the top and tap on Approve.

If you are getting Duo Mobile notifications but you aren’t signing into anything, click the Deny button and then contact the Help Desk immediately https://www.ntc.edu/helpdesk
